This new home is designed for wheelchair accessibility as well as sustainability. Featured on the TV show Renovation Nation on Planet Green, the Decatur Tour of Homes, and in local articles, this home has several unique solutions making it accessible and green. All four exits to the rear courtyard have wood decking over a concrete trough, providing a flat area in front of each door eliminating backward rolling of the wheel chair when reaching for keys. The trough carries the storm water to a 3400 gallon subsurface cistern. 6 above ground cisterns containing about 600 gallons are located on all corners of the building disguised inside brick vaults. Copper rain chains provide an Asian twist as well as a beautiful alternative to the typical downspout. The Prairie style inspiration allowed for passive solar/ventilation and natural daylight optimization while respectfully introducing an historic modernist style rooted in the Arts & Crafts movement to a neighborhood of single story Arts & Crafts bungalows.
