Trackside Tavern is a Decatur icon, but not the type for a suit and tie. Known for it’s “rough around the edges” charm, it’s a great place to have a beer, play pool, darts, and if you’re lucky you may have an Indigo Girl sighting. Unfortunately, in 2009 the building suffered significant fire damage. After months of analysis and design, it was determined that most of the Shell Building had either suffered direct damage or was connected structurally to compromised construction. After rebuilding most of the exterior Shell, the interior finish project presented a new challenge. Recreating charm of any kind is a difficult task as the natural patina of many years of age is the backbone of that aesthetic. Luring the original patrons back to a shiny new tavern and convincing them that change is a good thing could have backfired. Jeremy Samford collected bricks from the fire and saved them to build a new bar, the central element in the space. Like a fireplace, it creates a centralizing feature of visual focus as well as the heart of the building’s functionality. Utilizing old brick, original furnishings, wood ceilings and beams, the interior space retained some of the warmth and charm of the existing space with a more sophisticated and functional design and a feeling of openness that was absent before.
